Central Valley Haiku Club - Summer 2013

This summer, the Central Valley Haiku Club held two meetings.
The first meeting, on the 29th of June, was held, as planned, at the Eastern Empire Restaurant (Howe Ave., Sacramento, CA).  Attending were members Bill Owen, Yvonne Cabalona, Ricardo de Bernardi, Lynne Sperry and Leslie Rose.
The first item of business was an update on the Jerry Kilbride Memorial 2013 English Language Haibun Contest.  Yvonne reported that entries have begun to come in.  We decided, in an effort to expand our number of entrants, we will post the contest several times between now and the contest deadline (December 1st) on both FaceBook and Twitter.
Before adjourning, poems were shared and the group celebrated:  Leslie Rose announced the publication of several poems over the next month in "Prune Juice" (Issue 10), "tinywords" (13.2). "a hundred gourds" (Issue 2.4), "Ribbons" (Spring/Summer 2013), and "Frogpond" (Spring/Summer 2013).  And the club was delighted to have three tan renga accepted by "Frogpond" for the Spring/Summer issue as well.

The second summer meeting was held August 10th at the Gekkeikan Sake Factory (Sibley St., Folsom, CA).  Attending were members Bill Owen, Yvonne Cabalona, Ricardo de Bernardi, Leslie Rose, Mark Hollingsworth and his wife, Nancy.
There was nothing new to report regarding the Jerry Kilbride Haibun contest, but we will be posting another reminder about the contest on Facebook and Twitter, and Secretary Leslie Rose will have flyers about the contest for the attendees at the annual Haiku Northwest's Seabeck Haiku Getaway which she will be attending.
The big topic of the day was our upcoming annual English-Language Haiku Reading which will again be held in October.  Yvonne has secured a room at the Gekkeikan Sake Factory (1136 Sibley St., Folsom, CA 95630) for Saturday, October 19th and the Reading will run from 1:00-3:00.  It is always the highlight of our year and we're hoping for a good turn-out.
Poems were shared and a round of tan renga were created before we adjourned, with the promise to work up more two line completions, individually, in the hopes of submitting a new cluster of tan renga to various publications.
Looking forward to seeing some of you at our October Reading.....

CVHC Meeting, April 20, 2013

The last of our Spring meetings was held at our second most favorite location, The Eastern Empire Restaurant in Sacramento.  Our attending members,  Bill Owen, Yvonne Cabalona, Ricardo de Bernardi, Lynne Sperry, and Leslie Rose, grazed through platters of delicious Asian cuisine as we caught up with what has been happening in our various lives.
The posting of our haibun contest information was discussed and we spent time exploring technology resources with our various i-phones and i-pads.
Before parting, poetry was shared and our next meeting date was discussed.
Our next meeting will again be held at the Eastern Empire Restaurant (Howe Ave., Sacramento, CA) on Saturday, June 29th, when we hope to workshop a few new tan renga.

CVHC Meeting on February 9, 2013

The CVHC meeting on Saturday, February 9, 2013, was held at the Gekkeikan Sake Factory in Folsom, California.  The members attending, Lynne Sperry, Bill Owen, Yvonne Cabalona, Ricardo de Bernardi and Leslie Rose, brought a feast of foods to munch on while we shared news before we got down to business.
The major business of the day involved preparing for our next Jerry Kilbride Memorial English Language Haibun Contest.  Adjustments were made to the contest rules in preparation for posting to the public.  We again settled on December 1st as the contest deadline for this year so that participants will have ample opportunity to send in many haibun.
We were delighted to hear that Bill Owen has won The Museum of Haiku Literature Award.
With no other pressing business to take care of, we then turned to the creative part of our get-together, sharing haiku and then using them to create tan renga. By meeting's end we had a dozen poems to show for our efforts, a very productive output for the afternoon.
Our next meeting will be Saturday, April 20, 2013, at the Golden Empire Restaurant on Howe Avenue in Sacramento, when we will again share laughter, food and poems.

CVHC December Meeting

Saturday, December 8, 2012, as the holiday season was in full swing, the CVHC members held their last meeting of the year at their favorite eating spot, Eastern Empire Restaurant in Sacramento.  Bill Owen, Yvonne Cabalona, Ricardo de Bernardi, Mark Hollingsworth and wife Nancy, and Leslie Rose were delighted to include Lynne Sperry in the festivities.  Lynne had attended several of our October Readings at the Gekkeikan Sake Factory.

We ate hearty, gabbed, and ate some more, before settling down to do a wee bit of business.

Yvonne announced that, having reached the deadline for our annual Jerry Kilbride English Language Haibun contest, the entries had been sent to the judges and we should be delighted to announce the winners at our next meeting in the new year.

On their I-pads/I-phones, both Bill and Mark showed off their entries at a new, interactive website, "Tapestry".  We agreed that the site shows great promise as a new and exciting venue for sharing writings.

Then going around the table, haiku and tanka were shared, and everyone was pleased that Lynne joined in, sharing several poems she had written after hearing poems that were read at the October Reading.

In the spirit of the season, gifts were shared....beaded jewelry for the ladies from Yvonne, English toffee from Nancy, candy suckers from Leslie, and bags of Fuyu persimmons from Mark.  Then as the afternoon ended, it was decided that the Club would meet again in February, and we will then workshop a few more tan renga.

The next meeting of the Club will be Saturday, February 9th, 2013, from 11:30-3:00 at the Gekkeikan Sake Factory in Folsom.    Any and all are welcome to join the fun.
